The Power of Gratitude

He Gives Life

Gratitude is defined as the quality of being thankful for life regardless of the problems associated with it and the readiness to show appreciation and to return kindness.

Studies in psychology have shown that gratitude is directly related to one’s success in life and to the level of happiness such a person has.

Those studies show that people who have an abiding spirit of gratitude are people who have a consistent happier life; relish moments that turn into lasting memories; deal with adversity better and build better relationships. That’s a lot of power packed in such a simple concept of giving thanks.

Let me leave you with two wonderful passages of exhortation to be grateful and one teaching us how a grateful heart sounds. It will make your day brighter no matter how dark it might have started.

Colossians 3:12-17

Therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, put on tender mercies, kindness, humility, meekness, longsuffering; 13 bearing with one another, and forgiving one another, if anyone has a complaint against another; even as Christ forgave you, so you also must do. 14 But above all these things put on love, which is the bond of perfection. 15 And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to which also you were called in one body; AND BE THANKFUL. 16 Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom, teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord. 17 And whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him.

Psalms 138

I will praise You with my whole heart;
Before the gods I will sing praises to You.
2 I will worship toward Your holy temple,
And praise Your name
For Your lovingkindness and Your truth;
For You have magnified Your word above all Your name.
3 In the day when I cried out, You answered me,
And made me bold with strength in my soul.
4 All the kings of the earth shall praise You, O Lord,
When they hear the words of Your mouth.
5 Yes, they shall sing of the ways of the Lord,
For great is the glory of the Lord.
6 Though the Lord is on high,
Yet He regards the lowly;
But the proud He knows from afar.
7 Though I walk in the midst of trouble, You will revive me;
You will stretch out Your hand
Against the wrath of my enemies,
And Your right hand will save me.
8 The Lord will perfect that which concerns me;
Your mercy, O Lord, endures forever;
Do not forsake the works of Your hands.
